Tinubu Nominates Members for NMDPRA, NUPRC Boards

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has forwarded the names of nominees for appointment into the boards of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) to the Senate for confirmation.

The nominations were contained in separate letters addressed to the Senate President and read during plenary. In the letters, President Tinubu urged the upper chamber to consider and confirm the nominees to strengthen governance and effective regulation of Nigeria’s oil and gas sector in line with the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).

NUPRC Board Nominees

Among those nominated for the NUPRC board is Senator Magnus Abe, who was named Chairman. Abe is a former senator representing Rivers South-East and has previously served on the board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

Other nominees to the NUPRC board include Paul Yaro Jezhi, a former chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Kaduna State, and Sunday Adebayo Babalola, a former senior official of the defunct Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR). The list also features executive commissioners responsible for key portfolios such as exploration and acreage management, production and development, finance and accounts, health, safety and environment, and corporate services.

NMDPRA Board Nominees

For the NMDPRA, President Tinubu nominated Adegbite Ebiowei Adeniji, a seasoned energy lawyer, as Chairman of the board. Adeniji is known for his extensive experience in petroleum law and policy advisory roles within Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.

Other nominees include Chief Kenneth Kobani, a former Minister of State for Trade and Investment, and Mrs Asabe Ahmed, both nominated as non-executive board members. The list also includes executive directors covering finance, gas infrastructure, hydrocarbon processing, distribution systems, economic regulation, and corporate services.

Next Steps

The nominees will be screened by the Senate, and successful candidates will be confirmed to formally take up their positions. President Tinubu emphasized that the appointments are crucial for consolidating reforms in the petroleum sector, improving regulatory oversight, and boosting investor confidence.

Why It Matters

The NUPRC oversees Nigeria’s upstream petroleum operations, while the NMDPRA regulates the midstream and downstream segments of the industry. Their boards play a critical role in policy implementation, transparency, and accountability under the Petroleum Industry Act. The confirmation of these nominees is expected to further strengthen Nigeria’s oil and gas governance framework.
