Shock Move: Atiku’s Son Dumps PDP, Declares Support for Tinubu’s Second Term

Atiku’s Son Defects to APC, Pledges Support for Tinubu’s Second Term as Barau Backs Move

Abubakar Atiku Abubakar, son of former Vice President and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has defected from the PDP to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), pledging his full support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second-term bid ahead of the 2027 general election .

The defection was formally announced on Thursday at the National Assembly complex in Abuja, where Abubakar Atiku was received by top APC leaders, including the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin .

Speaking after joining the party, Abubakar said his decision was a personal one, driven by his belief in the policies and leadership direction of the APC under President Tinubu. He expressed confidence in the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that he was ready to contribute meaningfully to its success.

“I am here to identify with the vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and to work actively for his re-election in 2027,” he said.

As part of the move, Abubakar announced the realignment of his political structure, formerly known as the Haske Atiku Organisation, directing its members and coordinators across the country to join the APC. The group has now been rebranded as the Haske Bola Tinubu Organisation, signaling a complete shift in loyalty to the ruling party .

Welcoming the new APC member, Senator Barau Jibrin described the defection as a significant boost for the party ahead of future elections. He said the move demonstrated growing national acceptance of the APC’s governance agenda and reaffirmed the party’s expanding influence across political divides.

“This defection shows that the APC continues to attract credible Nigerians who believe in President Tinubu’s leadership and vision for the country,” Barau said .

Reacting to the development, Atiku Abubakar clarified that his son’s decision was purely personal and did not reflect his own political position. The former vice president maintained that he remains committed to his political ideals and would continue to engage in national discourse in line with his convictions .

The defection has sparked widespread reactions within political circles, with analysts describing it as one of the most symbolic cross-party moves in recent times, given Atiku Abubakar’s long-standing role as a leading opposition figure.
