Lagos-Based Lawyer Survives Suspected Ritual Attack

Update: Lagos-Based Lawyer Survives Suspected Ritual Attack

A Lagos-based lawyer, Ifeyinwa Christopher, has recounted a terrifying experience after surviving a brutal attack by a suspected ritualist while traveling along the Asaba–Benin Expressway in Delta State.

According to her account, the incident occurred late on December 19, 2025, as she was heading from Koka Junction near Asaba to Ogwashi-Uku for a family burial. Trouble began when the shuttle bus driver suddenly stopped in a deserted area, claiming the vehicle had developed a fault.

Moments later, the situation turned violent. The driver reportedly robbed her of her belongings, beat her severely, and attempted to pluck out her eyes, an act she believes was linked to ritual activities. Despite sustaining serious injuries, Christopher resisted fiercely, raising an alarm until the attacker fled.

She was rushed to a specialist hospital, where doctors treated her for severe facial injuries and eye damage that nearly left her blind.

Speaking after the incident, Christopher expressed disappointment over what she described as a weak response from security agencies. Although the matter was reported to the police, she said there has been no meaningful investigation or arrest so far. She also claimed that a government official who promised to visit her in the hospital never showed up.

The attacker remains at large as of January 2026.

The incident has renewed concerns about traveler safety, especially for women, on Nigeria’s highways amid rising cases of robbery and suspected ritual-related crimes.

Advice to travelers: Use trusted transport services, avoid late-night journeys when possible, and stay alert on inter-state roads.
