FG Set to Review Tariff Policies to Boost Local Production

The Federal Government has announced plans to review existing tariff policies as part of efforts to strengthen local production, reduce import dependence, and stimulate economic growth.

According to government officials, the review will focus on aligning tariff structures with Nigeria’s industrial development goals, ensuring that local manufacturers are adequately protected while also promoting competitiveness and innovation. The move is expected to support key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and agro-processing.

The government noted that current tariff regimes in some areas may no longer reflect present economic realities, adding that adjustments will be made to encourage the use of locally sourced raw materials and enhance value addition within the country.

Stakeholders in the manufacturing sector have long called for a comprehensive tariff review, arguing that high production costs, coupled with the influx of cheaper imported goods, have hindered the growth of local industries. Industry players believe the planned policy shift could help revive struggling factories, create jobs, and improve Nigeria’s trade balance.

The Federal Government also emphasized that the review process will involve consultations with relevant stakeholders, including manufacturers, trade unions, and economic experts, to ensure that the new tariff framework balances consumer interests with industrial development.

If successfully implemented, the revised tariff policies are expected to boost local capacity, encourage investment, and contribute to the broader goal of achieving sustainable economic growth and self-reliance.
