BREAKING: Driver Charged in Fatal Nigeria Crash Involving Anthony Joshua

Sagamu, Ogun State — Nigerian police have formally charged the driver of a vehicle conveying British-Nigerian boxing star Anthony Joshua following a tragic road accident that claimed the lives of two of the boxer’s close friends and team members.

The fatal crash occurred in the early hours of December 29, 2025, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Sagamu, Ogun State. Joshua, 36, was traveling in a Lexus SUV driven by Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode (also identified as Kayode Adeniyi), aged between 46 and 47.

According to preliminary findings by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the vehicle was traveling at high speed while overtaking when it suffered a tire burst, causing the driver to lose control. The SUV subsequently rammed into a stationary truck illegally parked on the roadside.

Two passengers — Sina Ghami, Joshua’s longtime strength and conditioning coach, and Latif “Latz” Ayodele (also known as Kevin Ayodele), his personal trainer — were pronounced dead at the scene. Both men were widely regarded as integral members of Joshua’s professional team and close personal friends.

Joshua and the driver sustained minor injuries. The former heavyweight champion was taken to a hospital for observation and was later discharged between December 31, 2025, and January 1, 2026. He has since returned to the United Kingdom. Joshua and his mother were also reported to have paid their respects at a Lagos funeral home before the bodies of the deceased were repatriated.

On January 2, 2026, Kayode appeared before the Sagamu Magistrate Court, where he was charged with four offences:

Dangerous driving causing death

Reckless and negligent driving

Driving without due care and attention resulting in bodily harm and property damage

Driving without a valid national driver’s licence

The defendant pleaded not guilty to all charges. The court granted him bail in the sum of ₦5 million, but he remains in custody pending the fulfillment of bail conditions. The case has been adjourned to January 20, 2026 for further hearing.

The incident has once again drawn national attention to persistent road safety challenges on Nigerian highways, particularly excessive speeding, poor vehicle maintenance, and the danger posed by illegally parked heavy-duty trucks.

Joshua was in Nigeria to reconnect with his family roots in Sagamu following his December 19, 2025 knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami. Tributes have since poured in from across the boxing world, including messages from promoter Eddie Hearn and boxer Jake Paul, who described the deceased as loyal, hardworking, and deeply impactful figures in Joshua’s career.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing. This remains a developing story.
