BREAKING: Deadly Bandit Attack on Kasuwan Daji Market, Niger State

Borgu, Niger State, Nigeria – January 5, 2026 – Suspected armed bandits attacked Kasuwan Daji market in Demo Village, Kabe District, Borgu Local Government Area, on Saturday, January 3, 2026.

Attack Details

The assailants, believed to have come from the nearby Kainji Lake National Park forest, struck the market at around 4:30 p.m., targeting traders and residents. Eyewitnesses reported that the bandits:

Opened fire indiscriminately, tying up and executing victims.

Looted shops and food items before setting the market and several homes ablaze.

Extended the attack into surrounding neighborhoods, shooting residents and burning houses, some with people trapped inside.

Targeted women and children alongside adult victims.

Casualties

Police figures: Niger State Police Command spokesperson SP Wasiu Abiodun confirmed over 30 deaths and several abductions, including children.

Local estimates: Residents and media reports (Daily Trust, Reuters) suggest 50–60 people killed or more, with many injured and bodies still being recovered.

Church sources: The Catholic Diocese of Kontagora reported over 40 fatalities.

President Bola Tinubu condemned the attack, instructing the military, police, and DSS to locate the perpetrators, rescue the abducted victims, and intensify security in vulnerable areas.

Context

This attack is part of a troubling pattern of escalating banditry across northwestern and central Nigeria, including mass killings, kidnappings for ransom, and raids on rural communities. Kasuwan Daji is near areas previously targeted, such as the November 2025 abduction of over 300 students and staff from a Catholic school in Papiri.

Security forces have visited the scene, but locals criticized the lack of prior protection despite repeated warnings and attacks in Borgu and neighboring LGAs. Casualty figures remain uncertain as recovery operations continue.
