Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic boat accident in Yobe State that claimed several lives and left many families in grief.
In a condolence message shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Atiku described the incident as heartbreaking, offering prayers and sympathies to the victims’ families and the people of Yobe State
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic boat mishap in Yobe State. My heartfelt condolences go to the families who lost their loved ones in this unfortunate incident. May God grant them the strength to bear this painful loss,” Atiku said.
Details of the Tragedy
The boat accident occurred on January 3, 2026, in Nguru Local Government Area of Yobe State, when a canoe carrying dozens of passengers capsized while crossing a river. The passengers were reportedly returning from farming and trading activities when the mishap happened .
Authorities confirmed that:
- At least 25 people lost their lives
- 13 passengers were rescued
- Several others are still missing, as search and rescue operations continue
Call for Action
Beyond mourning the victims, Atiku stressed the need for urgent improvements in inland waterway safety, noting that such tragedies are often preventable.
