The Tragic Loss of Anthony Joshua's Closest Allies: Inside the Bond and the Fatal Nigeria Crash

Anthony Joshua Mourns Loss of Two Key Team Members in Tragic Lagos-Ibadan Road Accident

Sagamu, Ogun State, Nigeria —

The world of boxing is in mourning following the untimely deaths of two men who were not only integral to British-Nigerian heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua’s professional team but also close personal friends. Sina "Evolve" Ghami and Kevin "Latif" Ayodele tragically died in a road accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on December 29, leaving the boxing community and Joshua’s supporters in shock.

A Brotherhood Beyond the Ring

Anthony Joshua has frequently credited his success to the unwavering support of a close-knit team. Ghami and Ayodele were central figures in this circle, evolving from childhood and early friendships to indispensable collaborators over more than a decade.

Sina Ghami, known affectionately as "Evolve," was Joshua’s childhood companion turned full-time sports rehabilitation coach. Ghami’s expertise in musculoskeletal injuries and recovery played a crucial role in Joshua’s rigorous training routines. He co-founded Evolve Gym in Ruislip, London, in 2017, a facility dedicated to holistic athlete development. Ghami was present at many of Joshua’s landmark fights, including the 2017 Wembley showdown against Wladimir Klitschko, and was widely regarded as a motivating and trusted figure in Joshua’s life.

Kevin "Latif" Ayodele, also known as Abdul Latif after his 2012 conversion to Islam, focused on mental wellness and overall fitness. Serving as Joshua’s personal trainer, Ayodele emphasized mindset and mental resilience, guiding the champion through high-pressure moments in the sport. His influence extended to other elite athletes, but his bond with Joshua was particularly close, blending mentorship, friendship, and family-like loyalty.

Together, Ghami and Ayodele provided Joshua with professional expertise and personal support, traveling worldwide to assist him with training camps, promotional events, and championship bouts. Their presence in Nigeria was part of Joshua’s post-fight relaxation following his December 19 victory over Jake Paul—a visit that tragically ended in loss.

The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Accident

The fatal crash occurred around 11:00 a.m. on December 29 near Makun, Sagamu, Ogun State. Joshua and his team were traveling in a Lexus SUV when it collided with a stationary truck during an overtaking maneuver. Early reports from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) suggest the accident may have resulted from excessive speed or a burst tire.

The SUV carried five adult males: Joshua, the driver, another passenger, Ghami, and Ayodele. Ghami and Ayodele died instantly at the scene, while Joshua and the remaining passengers were hospitalized. Joshua sustained minor injuries, including bruises, and is reported to be stable, conscious, and communicating with family and medical personnel.

The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is a key transport corridor prone to traffic accidents, especially during the holiday season. Ogun State Police have secured the accident site and initiated a full investigation. Preliminary assessments indicate no foul play.

Tributes and Legacy

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu extended personal condolences to Joshua and his family, pledging support during this difficult time. Tributes have also poured in from the global boxing community, with promoters and fellow athletes recognizing Ghami and Ayodele as “unsung heroes” whose dedication helped shape Joshua’s illustrious career.

Evolve Gym continues to operate as a testament to Ghami’s vision, while Ayodele’s digital presence continues to inspire conversations about fitness and faith. Their loss serves as a solemn reminder of life’s fragility and the enduring value of loyalty and friendship.
