Nigerian Military Intensifies Surveillance on Fleeing Terrorists Following US Airstrikes
Abuja, Nigeria —
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced heightened security operations across parts of northwest Nigeria following recent United States-led precision airstrikes on militant camps in Sokoto State.
According to military authorities, the intensified measures are aimed at tracking and intercepting suspected terrorists who were displaced by the airstrikes conducted on December 25 in coordination with Nigerian security agencies.
The joint operation reportedly targeted camps linked to Islamic State-affiliated groups, including foreign fighters operating within the region. Local officials and security sources indicated that some surviving militants fled the affected areas after the strikes, with unconfirmed reports suggesting that certain elements may have crossed into neighboring Niger Republic.
Speaking on the development, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Samaila Uba, said Nigerian forces have increased patrols, intelligence surveillance, and border monitoring to prevent fleeing fighters from regrouping or carrying out retaliatory attacks.
He noted that troops have been deployed to vulnerable communities, while checkpoints have been reinforced along major access routes across the northwest to strengthen internal security.
Military assessments indicate that the airstrikes, which were carried out based on shared intelligence, resulted in multiple militant casualties. Officials stated that efforts were made to minimize collateral damage, and no civilian deaths were reported within the primary impact zones, although debris was said to have affected surrounding areas.
The operation highlights ongoing security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States in addressing transnational terrorist threats in the northwest, which authorities distinguish from the long-running insurgency in the northeast.
Residents in affected states have been urged to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious movements or activities to security agencies as investigations and security operations continue.
